Mirthe Bolhuis

Past
I came in contact with music from an early age. My father is a music collector and my mother sings. I got hooked too, and since I was six years old I played the harp for seven years. In the eighth grade I wanted to be something more than that cute girl, sitting behind the harp. I wanted to sing in the spotlight. My harp was exchanged for a guitar and I played in my first bands in high school. When I was 17 years old I was admitted to the Academy of Pop Culture, where I developed a love for country music and took my first steps toward Nashville.

Present
Right now I’m sitting behind my laptop in a hostel that has become my home. Surrounded by musicians and dreamers, I clean bathrooms, I keep the washing machine running, I check guests in and help where I can. It is, from my fourth year at the Academy on, what I’m living for. Here I find the inspiration to write songs, here are my friends, here is my bed – bunk bed though. And the sky is nowhere as beautiful as it is here.

Future
My future? I have to marry an American, they say. This helps in getting a green card. But that’s too much of a stretch for me, hehe. After the summer I’ll have my first go at trying to win a green card in the Greencard Lottery. All my money goes to the next ticket. And one day, I will not return. Until then I write a book about life as a traveler with a love for a city and a dream to make it there one day. Big time.
